DCMS provides grant-in-aid to English Heritage (EH), the Government's statutory adviser on all matters concerning the conservation of England's historic environment. EH not only records and protects England's historic environment, it ensures that the public are able to appreciate and enjoy the historic sites in their care.
It is the largest source of non-lottery grant funding for historic buildings and ancient monuments, conservation areas, archaeological sites, cathedrals and churches. It is also responsible for the maintenance, repair and presentation of over 400 properties in public ownership or guardianship.  English Heritage works in partnership with the central government departments, local authorities, voluntary bodies and the private sector.
