Hamble School

Solent Stars basketball team are among the regular users of the refurbished facilities at the Hamble School.

The school, which has now been granted sports college status, is also home to the Dynamo School of Gymnastics and the Hamble Badminton Club.

Sport England invested over £2.2m of Lottery funding in up-grading the school’s well-used, existing facilities and turning it into a true community sports centre.

Under the project, a sports hall, multi purpose studio, fitness suite and other facilities, including a GP referral room, were all created.
The school already had an indoor swimming pool, floodlit ATP and gymnasium and the new facilities, which were opened in 2001, are now available to everyone all year round and not just in school time.

  • 70 per cent of visits to the centre were from the Under 18s
  • The GP referral scheme working closely with the primary care trust has increased with 5 hours every two weeks
  • Over 74,000 people have used the centre helping Sport England  towards its target of increasing participation by one per cent a year up to 2020
  • The number of coaches has increased from five to 42
  • 53 per cent of centre visits have come from women and girls
  • There are now 12 different extra curricular activities available each week
  • Seven new jobs have been created as a result of the facility
  • Weekly coaching hours for the under 18’s have more than doubled from 13 to 29 hours
