Nice and Nasty

the Goodwin Sands lie off Deal and the strong winds and powerful currents ensure the sands are always shifting. Almost two thousand ships have met their deaths there. On the bright side, in summer at low tide there is an annual cricket match played on them.

Heritage: Key policies and strategies

Regional Economic Strategy -www.seeda.co.uk/RES/index.asp
The historic environment sector has contributed to the formulation of the new Regional Economic Strategy for the South East for 2006-16, agreed in late 2006. Historic environment sector agencies have engaged with the process for over a year now through participation in a series of workshops and through subsequently submitting consultation responses on the draft document. The sector has welcomed: the emphasis placed on investing in urban renaissance, particularly in the regions coastal towns; the championing of the environment as a key source of competitive advantage; and the recognition that quality of life is a fundamental part of the region's success to which the historic environment contributes so much. The historic environment sector is now engaging in policy initiatives and projects that will help it play its part and strengthen its role in shaping the region֒s economic success in the next ten years.

The South East Plan www.southeast-ra.gov.uk/southeastplan
The Government's Sustainable Communities agenda places great challenges on the South East region to accommodate thousands of new homes in the next 2025 years in three key growth areas. The sector has been engaged in the development of the emerging Thames Gateway Strategy, is involved in various regeneration initiatives, and has been working in partnership with other cultural agencies to ensure appropriate levels of cultural provision are developed in new communities through the national Where we live! initiative. The sector has also contributed to the emerging South East Regional Plan, a spatial framework for development in the region to 2026, which focuses on urban renaissance and quality of life, particularly in growth areas and numerous designated growth points.
