Culture and sport in schools

Print friendly version

Programmes aimed at strengthening the role of culture and sport in schools in promoting the physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people include:

  • Extended Schools - ensuring that every school offers a wide range of extended activities and services from 8am - 6pm by 2010. A further £1.3 billion has been committed for 2008-2011 to expand the range of activities on offer, especially in sport and culture. This includes £265 million to provide disadvantaged children and young people with access to positive extended school activities of their choice.
  • Healthy Schools - an expectation that by 2009 all schools will be working towards the Healthy Schools Programme and at least 75% will have achieved accreditation
  • Building Schools for the Future - school building programmes, including BSF, with better PE, sport, play and outdoor recreation facilities
  • Active Travel - efforts to ensure local authorities work with schools and parents to increase cycling and walking to and from school
  • Five hour sport offer - increasing participation by 5-16 year-olds from at least two hours of high quality PE and sport each week to five hours within or outside school by 2011, with three hours for young people aged 16-19.
