Improving Opportunity, Strengthening Society is a cross-government strategy to increase race equality and improve community cohesion. It draws together the different government programmes relating to race equalities and community cohesion and aims to:
- increase equality between different races
- build community cohesion by helping people from different backgrounds get along well together in their local area.
The strategy recognises that culture and sport help build community cohesion by:
- providing enriching opportunities to participate in activities that encourage young people from different communities to come together and help create a shared sense of belonging
- bringing people together to understand and celebrate the contribution made by a range of cultures to Britain
- challenging prejudice and racism.
