Independent Living Strategy

Print friendly version

The Independent Living Strategy is a cross-government strategy to improve disabled people’s experiences and life chances. The aim of the five year strategy is to ensure that:

  • disabled people who need support to go about their daily lives have greater choice and control over how support is provided
  • disabled people have greater access to housing, education, employment, leisure and transport opportunities and to participation in family and community life.

The strategy recognises that culture and sport are an important part of delivering personally tailored services and support for young disabled people in transition to adulthood. Measures to track progress in achieving ‘personalisation, choice and control’ and ‘young disabled people in transition to adulthood’ include:

  • participation of disabled people in cultural, sporting and leisure activities (Office for Disability Issues Life Chances Indicator)
  • young people’s participation in positive activities (PSA14, NI 110).
