The Respect programme is a cross-governmental response to anti-social behaviour and its causes. It aims to help build a modern culture of respect.
The Respect Action Plan has six main strands:
- Supporting families
- A new approach to the most challenging families
- Improving behaviour and attendance in schools
- Activities for children and young people
- Strengthening communities
- Effective enforcement and community justice
The ‘activities for children and young people’ strand focuses on expanding the role of sport, constructive activities and volunteering. These are seen as positive routes for nurturing a culture of respect amongst young people, particularly from deprived backgrounds. Specific actions include:
- piloting Youth Opportunity Cards and expanding the Youth Opportunity Fund
- implementing Britain’s first national youth voluntary service
- working with regional sports and arts bodies to target funding in the most deprived communities
- expanding mentoring projects to develop positive role models, including establishing a Sports Champions mentoring programme.
