The following examples of indicators for improving the life chances of children and young people have been taken from Sustainable Community Strategies up to the end of 2007 and round 1-3 Local Area Agreements:
- The percentage of young people (and young people from priority groups) who:
- have participated in an arts activity
- have used a public library service
- have used a park or open spaceat least (x) times per week/month/year (e.g. once a week, twice a month, once in the last 12 months etc).
- The percentage of 5 -16 year olds who spend a minimum of (x) hours each week (e.g. 2, 5 etc) on high quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum. (Could also be applied to arts and creative activities).
- The percentage of 5 to 16 year olds who travel to school using sustainable modes of transport, including ‘active transport’ (cycling, walking etc.).
- Number of young people on specialist cultural and sports programmes contributing to specific outcomes e.g.
- a reduction in obesity
- reduction in anti-social behaviour.
- Numbers of disabled children enabled to use inclusive cultural , play and sports services.
- The number of young people under 16 with disabilities participating in project activities/events of (named) cultural/sports/play project.
- Use of local authority cultural/sports facilities by 11-19 year olds.
- Numbers of a) looked after children and b) young people from need to reach groups accessing free/subsidised cultural and sports services.
- Take up of culture and sport holiday schemes by young people, including young people with physical, sensory or learning disabilities and from BME groups.
- Number of young people attending summer reading schemes or homework clubs/study support based in libraries.
- Number of young people attending youth sports nights regularly.
- Numbers of pupils/numbers of visits by education groups to Council museums/galleries/cultural facilities.
- The number of voluntary and community organisations (i.e. sports clubs, music societies, drama groups etc) who make specific provision for participation by young people.
- Number of after school cultural and sport clubs.
- The percentage of schools that have obtained Artsmark.
- The number of sports clubs achieving or working towards Clubmark and Club accreditation.
- The percentage of children, young people and parents satisfied with the quality of cultural, play and sports activities.

The number of locations where community play rangers are working outside with children and young people.
