The following examples of indicators for protecting and enhancing the environment have been taken from Sustainable Community Strategies up to the end of 2007 and round 1-3 Local Area Agreements:

• Number of completed planned public realm improvement schemes.
• £ investment in heritage conservation. 
• Number of participants in green tourism business scheme.
• Number of/amount of land (hectares) designated as Local Nature Reserves. 
• The number/percentage of local authority parks obtaining a Green Flag award. 
• Number of constituted Park Friends groups. 
• Total number of conservation areas in the local authority area.
• Percentage of conservation areas in the local authority area with an up to date character appraisal/ published management proposals.
• Percentage of Site Management Plans adopted for Council open spaces. 
• Number of Village Design Statements adopted by the District Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance. 
• Amount of waste landfilled from specified Council facilities including libraries and leisure centres.
