Examples of local performance indicators - active participation

The following examples of indicators for active participation have been taken from Sustainable Community Strategies up to the end of 2007 and round 1-3 Local Area Agreements.

  • The percentage of people in the community (and from priority groups) who have participated in an arts activity at least (x) times per week/month/year (e.g. once a week, twice a month, once in the last 12 months etc).
  • The percentage of the adult population participating in at least 30 minutes of sport and active recreation (including walking and cycling) of at least moderate intensity on at least 3 days a week. 
  • The percentage of 5 -16 year olds who spend a minimum of (x) hours each week (e.g. 2, 5 etc) on high quality PE and school sport within and beyond the curriculum. (Could also be applied to arts and creative activities).
  • The percentage of 5 to 16 year olds who travel to school using sustainable modes of transport, including ‘active transport’ (cycling, walking etc.).
  • Number of individuals on specialist sport and cultural programmes contributing to specific outcomes e.g. 
    • a reduction in obesity (young people/adults)
    • prevention of falls among older people
    • reduction in heart disease and other illnesses/increased life expectancy
    • improved mental health and well being
    • improved quality of life and independence
    • reduction in anti-social behaviour.
  • The percentage of the adult population who have taken part in organised competitive sport at least (x) times per week/month/year.
  • The number of people and/or people from priority groups (e.g. over 55 year, BME etc) engaged in organised walks – local history and archaeology walks, health walks etc.
  • Numbers of disabled children enabled to use inclusive play, sport and cultural services. 
  • The number of young people under 16 with disabilities participating in project activities/events of (named) play/cultural/sports project.
  • The number of young people participating in play programmes.
