Examples of local performance indicators - cultural and sporting infrastructure provision and quality

The following examples of indicators for cultural and sporting infrastructure provision and quality have been taken from Sustainable Community Strategies up to the end of 2007 and round 1-3 Local Area Agreements:

  • The number of educational establishments with cultural and sports facilities available for community use.
  • The number of voluntary and community organisations (i.e. sports clubs, music societies, drama groups etc) who make specific provision for participation by young people.
  • The percentage of residents that find it easy to access cultural, play and sports facilities e.g. theatre, cinema, swimming pool.
  • Percentage of the population that are within 20 minutes travel time (urban - walking; rural - driving) of a range of 3 different cultural and/or sports facility types, at least one of which has achieved a quality mark.
  • Percentage of the population living within 1 mile of a public library.
  • Percentage of public libraries that provide public access to ICT facilities connected to the internet.
  • Number of workstations at public libraries per 10,000 population.
  • Percentage take up of available ICT time in libraries.
  • Number of completed planned public realm improvement schemes.
  • £ investment in heritage conservation.
  • Number of/amount of land (hectares) designated as Local Nature Reserves.
  • Total number of conservation areas in the local authority area.
  • Percentage of conservation areas in the local authority area with an up to date character appraisal/ published management proposals.
  • Percentage of Site Management Plans adopted for Council open spaces.
  • Number of Village Design Statements adopted by the District Council as Supplementary Planning Guidance.
  •  The number of schools/college providing sport and leisure courses.
  • The number of carnivals, exhibitions and events that are held.
  • Number of constituted Park Friends groups.
  • Number of after school cultural and sport clubs.
  • The percentage of schools that have obtained Artsmark.
  • The percentage of schools working towards/achieving the Healthy Schools Standard.
  • The number of sports clubs achieving or working towards Clubmark and Club accreditation.
  • The percentage of public facilities in a local area obtaining quality marks/accreditation:
    • Quest (arts, sport or leisure facilities)
    • Green Flag award (parks and open spaces) 
    • Blue Flag award (beaches)
  • Number of accommodation providers across all sectors participating in Quality Assurance schemes.
  • Mean quality rating of tourist accommodation. 
  • Number of attractions that are signed up to a visitor’s charter.
  • Number of hotels/attractions that have achieved accessible standards (above minimum requirements).
  • Number of participants in green tourism business scheme.
  • Number of play providers working to improve the quality of play provision.

  • Percentage of playgrounds that conform to National Standards.

  • Percentage of the population with accessible green space less than 300m from their homes.

  • The number of safe play areas.

  • Accessibility of play areas.
