The South East England Health Strategy: A strategy for improving health and well-being in the South East region is the first Health Strategy for the South East. It aims to ensure that the region becomes the healthiest place to live in the UK and one of the healthiest regions in Europe by:

  • improving the health and well-being of all the population
  • addressing the underlying causes of ill-health in a sustainable way
  • reducing the inequalities in health that exist between different geographical areas and population groups across the region.

The strategy identifies the main priorities and actions needed to improve the health of people living in the South East. It focuses on six themes:

  • reducing health inequalities
  • promoting a sustainable region
  • promoting safer communities
  • increasing the positive relationship between employment and health
  • improving outcomes for children and young people
  • improving outcomes in later life.

The strategy recognises the health contribution of participation in active play, sport and physical activity and healthy eating. It includes specific actions aimed at:

  • reducing health inequalities and increasing life expectancy
  • improving workplace health and social inclusion in employment
  • promoting the physical, emotional and mental health and well-being of children and young people
  • improving the healthy life expectancy of older people

Local Strategic Partnerships and Sport England are included among the strategy’s delivery partners. Local Area Agreements are recognised as important mechanisms for achieving improved health.
