The South East Plan

Print friendly version
The South East Plan - a clear vision for the South East (draft 2006) sets out a vision for the future of the region to 2026. It aims to ensure that the South East remains economically successful and an attractive place to live for future generations. The draft Plan outlines the need to respond to challenges facing the region such as housing, the economy, transport and protecting the environment. It provides a spatial framework for other regional strategies, such as the Regional Economic Strategy.

The South East Plan recognises the importance and contribution of culture and sport to the South East:

‘The activities of the cultural and creative sectors permeate many of the key concerns of the South East Plan … Cultural and community facilities – such as libraries, community and sports centres along with village halls – can provide lifelong learning and skills development in an environment that may be more suitable to groups excluded from, or less able to access, mainstream services. The provision of mixed use facilities (encompassing sport and cultural activity) and the activities they support offer a method of bringing together existing and new communities in areas of growth.’
The South East Plan - a clear vision for the South East, South East England Regional Assembly, Draft 2006 (Social, Cultural and Health Dimensions)

Several of the policies for specific topics in the Regional Policy Framework are relevant to culture and sport, including:

  • Countryside and Landscape Management
  • Management of the Built and Historic Environment
  • Town Centres
  • Tourism and Related Sports and Recreation
  • Social, Cultural and Health Dimensions
Culture and sport contribute to some other topic and cross-cutting policy areas. They also contribute to the Sub-regional Policy Framework. This covers the nine sub-regions where most development will be concentrated (plus the Isle of Wight).
