Reducing crime and fear of crime

Print friendly version

Cultural and sports activities provide constructive things for people to do and places to go. They help divert young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour, which contributes to crime prevention and reduction. Cultural and sports activities are effective in engaging people at risk of exclusion and at the margins of community life. They can also be a useful way of raising awareness of a whole range of community safety issues.

Improving the quality of public open space and community buildings, and encouraging their increased use for play, culture and sport, can also reduce crime and the fear of crime.

See what Robin Hooper, Chief Executive of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council says about the contribution of culture and sport in addressing crime.

Sport and culture provides structured constructive diversionary activities particularly for young adults, giving them focus, a sense of purpose, belonging and positive role models.’
