The draft Medway Regeneration Framework 2006-2016 sets out the vision for Medway to become a City of Learning, Culture, Tourism and Enterprise Ӆ [and] a premier European city of World Heritage status.
This is to be achieved through six Priority Interventions, one of which is to develop a cultural offer appropriate to a city of a population of 300,000. A significant driver for this cultural investment is establishing the identity of Medway as a city, and to endow it with ԓa positive noteworthy image as the cultural capital of the Thames Gateway. An important part of this will be applying for World Heritage Site status for Chatham Historic Dockyard and associated fortifications: this is currently scheduled for 2009.
A number of new cultural facilities are proposed and reference is made to a programme of development, support and community endeavours to help widen access to cultural activities. The links between culture and education, learning and skills are made as is the importance of culture to support the development of a vibrant evening economy.
A further Priority Intervention is to build on MedwayԒs track record in hosting major cultural and sporting events by capitalising on the 2012 Olympic Games.
