The South East is home to one of the most famous battles to ever take place on British soil – the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where the invading Normans, under William the Conqueror, defeated the Anglo-Saxons, thus imposing a new dynasty on the English throne and uniting the country in a way it had not known since the Romans.
