The Active People Survey is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in England. The survey ran from October 2005 to October 2006, with c.356,000 completed interviews. The survey has collected data concerning the levels of participation in sport and recreational physical activity for adults living in all of the District, Unitary and Metropolitan Authorities in England. The survey was carried out over a full year with a sample of 1,000 interviews for all Local Authorities in England, evenly divided over the 12 months of the year to account for seasonality factors.
The aim of this research is to provide data on participation in sport and recreational physical activity amongst a locally representative sample of adults aged 16 years and over for each local authority in England. The Active People Survey will provide the necessary information to reliably benchmark local authority areas against a set of key policy related indicators and to increase our understanding of sport and active recreational behaviour patterns and determinants across the population.
