Taking Part Survey

The Taking Part Survey is a national continuous survey of participation in cultural activity through face-to-face interviews with adults living in private households in England. The survey was commissioned by the DCMS, Arts Council England, Sport England, MLA and English Heritage, and kicked off in July 05.

The key aims of the survey are to:

  • provide a robust measurement of the Departmental Public Service Agreement (PSA) target 3
  • meet the key data requirements of stakeholders around the general theme of participation, attendance and attitudes amongst individual DCMS targets at a national level
  • provide data comparable across different sectors.

The lowest geographical area in which sample sizes may afford a reliable result are Government Office Regions.

The Southeast Cultural Observatory and the South East Regional Assembly have worked together to use the Taking Part Survey results for the South East to measure Objective 9 of the Integrated Regional Framework, published in the Annual Monitoring Report in the Spring 07. Objective 9 is the participation in cultural activities by priority groups.

The DCMS is currently investigating putting the Year 1 dataset on a central internet server which will allow simple analysis of the data to be undertaken by interested parties.
