The South East is home to one of the most famous battles to ever take place on British soil the Battle of Hastings in 1066, where the invading Normans, under William the Conqueror, defeated the Anglo-Saxons, thus imposing a new dynasty on the English throne and uniting the country in a way it had not known since the Romans.
