Accentuate

Accentuate is a programme for the South East funded by the Legacy Trust UK

The overall aim of the programme is to use the inspiration provided by the International Paralympic Movement to tackle disadvantage, raise aspirations and celebrate excellence. Accentuate intends to change the lives of disabled people by putting them at the heart of a programme that takes its inspiration from the South East region's unique heritage as the birthplace of the Paralympics.

Accentuate has five objectives:-

1. That every young disabled person in the South East has the opportunity to create, compete or collaborate with a young person in another competitor country during period 2008/2012.

2. That the South East becomes the most welcoming and accessible region for disabled people in the UK.

3. That the South East region is recognised as a lead region in the UK for disability and deaf cultural activity and as an international centre of excellence.

4. That the South East's role as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement at Stoke Mandeville is recognised by the world and that its historic archive and the individual histories of Paralympian athletes alongside the impact of the movement itself is explored by artists, and young people in the South East.

5. That people across the South East have raised awareness of and are inspired by the values of personal best, going for gold and excellence and are offered strategies to help them to adopt these values in their own lives.

How does Accentuate link with the Cultural Olympiad?

Accentuate is not a Cultural Olympiad programme but many of the projects within the scheme are aligned to it and could, in some cases, apply for the Inspire mark.

Objective 1: In Create, Compete, Collaborate we would hope that some of the projects may carry the Inspire mark.

Objective 2: in making this a Welcome Region, Cultural Olympiad activity is likely to include outdoor shows and interactive technology to ensure a creative welcome. Access All Areas which aims to encourage disabled volunteers is part of one of the London 2012 culture team’s major projects.

Objective 3: reflects the Cultural Olympiad vision to be the Lead Region for Deaf and Disabled Cultural Providers. The Creative Programmer will be working with the London 2012 culture team on the project Unlimited which aims to celebrate disability arts and sport. The Olympiad will continue to encourage deaf and disabled cultural providers and deaf and disabled audiences throughout the four years of the festival programme.

Objective 4:the Stoke Mandeville archive is expected to carry the Inspire mark and the Cultural Olympiad will support Stoke Mandeville and artists in creative responses to its history.

Objective 5: Open Weekend will be celebrated with outdoor shows in Windsor and Dover .
