What is an observatory?

At its simplest level, an observatory is a place from which to observe something. Astronomical observatories are facilities built to command a wide view of the sky, or to look in-depth at its particular features.

  • look at the broad scope of how the cultural sector is structured e.g. its key organisations, policies and mechanisms
  • look at how the cultural sector fits with and influences other "sectors" e.g. local government, health organisations
  • focus on themes where we can identify the positive impact of culture e.g. learning and skills
